Hey everyone! Arriving in Civitavecchia by cruiseship in mid September after 10 days in the Greek Islands and want to get to Cinque Terre and then Siena before heading home 5 nights 6 days later. Planning to take the train from Civi to Cinque Terre and staying for 2 nights (if I ever find a vacancy at somewhere half decent!) then to Siena for 2 more nights and finally to Rome to fly home. Question is would you take the train or rent a car to go to Siena? And where to stay in both Siena and CT. The car will allow some flexibility but will also limit my wine consumption!
If you're just going to Siena, a rental car will be an unneeded hassle. Better to take the train.
Definitely take the train. Cars are a hassle in Siena. Take the taxi from the train station to your hotel. You can also get a bus...if you are staying at the Albergo Bernini...where I stayed...there is a bus stop very close to the hotel....right across from St. Catherines church.
Thanks for the replies. Good to know. Too much to see and too few days... as usual! I think using Siena as a base and catching a wine tour or hiring a driver to show us the countryside and perhaps a few surrounding towns would be the best idea. Would you recommend Albergo Bernini?
