Civita di Bagnoregio?

I am intrigued by this place, but am wondering if it is worth visiting. If so, how long would you recommend.

It really depends on the rest of your itinerary. Share that, and we can advise how you might fit it in and if it would be worthwhile. I’d stop by if I was in the vicinity but not make a special trip for it. I believe it is a pass by kind of place.

We absolutely loved it and I’m so glad we didn’t pass it by. We visited late in the afternoon (maybe around 5:00 pm) and most people were leaving then. Neither the bridge nor the town was crowded. I think huge crowds would have made it much less magical. We were there in May 2024.

Oh I meant visit if you are passing by, just to be clear, not pass it by outright. Just in case that was confusing, lol.

You're going to get split opinions on this one! I'm one who didn't really care for it.

I visited on the Village Italy tour so we were with a guide. It's basically a deserted hilltop. All the residents were moved out because it's eroding and the buildings on the edge were in danger of collapse. It felt abandoned except for the many cats. We basically walked over, walked around a little, had some bruschetta and walked back to the parking lot.

I know Rick loves it but it's one of his choices that I don't understand. It's also one of those places that, to me, looks better from a distance rather than up close, lol!

Do you or anyone you are traveling with have a fear of heights? The bridge over to it is high. I didn't have problems going over but was really uncomfortable coming back even walking in the middle of the bridge.

Two questions:
1. Will you have a car?
2. Will your planned itinerary take you through the vicinity (for example Orvieto or simply through the A1 freeway between Rome and Tuscany)?

If the answer is YES to both questions, then it’s probably worth visiting Civita, if you have the time.

If the answer is NO to 1 but YES to 2, it might be worthwhile if you are going to be in Orvieto and have the extra time to add a bus trip to Civita.

If the answer is YES to 1 but NO to 2, then I wouldn’t make the effort to purposely go out of my way to visit Civita.

If the answer is NO to both, then I wouldn’t even contemplate that visit.

lol me too.
I only had to look at a picture of the bridge and knew I would never be walking over that. We did stop at the viewpoint at edge of the new town on our way past last fall- glad I saw it but that was enough.

Well, since you’ve said what you did, I’ll tell you that it kind of slopes down from when you leave CdB and somehow that perspective scared the “eeemortal sh-t” (as my Dad would have said) out of me. I had to have my brother hold my hand for pete’s sake and another guy on the tour got on the other side of me. For a minute I thought I was either going to have to live there or crawl. The other guy was a physician and when we got about 3/4 of the way back across he said “Well, if you fell now you’d just be severely injured but not killed”. The bridge is wide. Maybe 20 feet?? So it wasn’t that I was close to the edge it was just the perspective because even looking down I could still see the drop in my periphery.

There are tons of things to enjoy in this area so no need to worry about skipping this.

I’m delighted to know that I’m not the only one who has to avoid heights. We had to leave Taromina, Sicily because of that. Switchbacks and all.

I am having a devil of a time planning this vacation. Unfortunately, hubby wants to see Portugal. I’m sure it’s very nice, but it’s not Italy, so I’m trying to kind of split our time between the two countries. We’ve done the major places in Italy, so, deciding which of the lovely UNESCO villages to see while accommodating a few cities in Portugal is, well, challenging.

What places in Italy and you interested in seeing? Just cross reference with flights out of Lisbon and Porto?

I can usually work around things by just skipping something and waiting nearby until others have done whatever it is. This one caught me by surprise. I was not bothered walking out there...if I had been I would have turned around immediately and waited nearby.

Pam, it’s really fascinating what will or will not trigger a phobia. I am definitely uncomfortable with heights and could not do something like cross a rope bridge if my life depended on it. No way I’m standing anywhere close to the edge of any vantage point. But I absolutely loved the walk both too and from Civita di Bagnoregio — in fact some of the best photos from our 3 week Italy trip came from that experience.

My significant other, who can cross any bridge with ease, quite literally turned a shade of green when attempting to climb the Eiffel Tower. Full on panic attack. My son and I were both completely fine.
