Civita di Bagnoregio

How difficult a hike is it to get to the main part of the town and how far is it from the car park? Where do you park, is there a fee?

Price: I was there last year, parking was free but I'm not sure if that's always true. Please verify when you get there. Distance; We parked at the base of the bridge. I have no idea if that ever gets full and forces you to park further out.

I certainly would not call it a hike nor would I call it difficult. It's short walk. Yes, it's uphill, but certainly nothing unusual or especially difficult. It's harder to walk around San Francisco than to walk into Civita. It's certainly no harder than walking around the rest of Italy.

Perhaps you may want to read some trip reports on Virtualtourist.com and see what you think. I don't know if you have any special concerns about walking.

Sherry,

It's not really a difficult "hike" at all from the car park to the village. The parking area near the base of the concrete bridge is about 10 minutes or so from the town of Bagnoregio. There are a few small Cafes, etc. in that area, but these were all closed when I was there last.

Regarding parking fees, I was using Bus transport so don't have any information on parking. You might want to check the Italy 2009 book or Rick's "Guidebook Updates" for the most current information.

The walk from the car park up to Civita takes about 10-15 minutes on average. Most of the concrete bridge has a gentle uphill slope except for the last part which is somewhat more "steep". While there are no cars in Civita, keep an ear open for motorcycles coming up behind you when you're walking up the bridge.

You can get a fairly good perspective of the bridge by having a look at This Site or The Civita website.

Happy travels!

Sherry,
We were there in 2002 and I'm SO glad we decided to go there. I had read that Rick Steves says "you'll wish you gotten in better shape" as you are walking up. We stopped and rested a couple times on the way and it wasn't too bad. Civita is magical, doesn't take long to see. Be sure to follow his walking tour up there. Have the delicious bruschetta made at the olive press place. I still think about it! You park at the base of the bridge and it's free(or was in 2002) You'll be glad you went!

We were there in September of 2008 and there was someone collecting money to park at the base of town. It wasn't much (2-3 euros). The man was just walking around catching people as they parked, but he had some official looking paper work that proved he was legit. He was also keeping the bathrooms clean, and we were thankful to have a bathroom at that moment (worth a euor or two). It is a bit of walk up (Many pics of Civita show the walkway) but not difficult. The car park is right at the base of the walkway. There is a cute town that you go through on the way that has awesome views of Civita-great for pics.

I'm going to piggy-back a question on Sherry's inquiry: How long a drive is it from Siena to Civita--time and distance?

Dwayne-Try viamichelin.com. It will tell you distance and time...but the times tend to be a little shorter than what it actually can take. Most of that drive is autostrada, so should be pretty accurate. We left Greve (North of Siena a little bit) at 6:30 and arrived in Orvieto at 8:45. Civita would be about 20-25 minutes further.
