Does anyone know if this ancient hill town was affected by the quake? I can't find any info on this specific region. I believe it is in Umbria and near Orvieto. Grazie
Terri,
Civita di Bagnoregio is indeed in Umbria, a short distance from the town of Bagnoregio. The closest larger town is Orvieto, about an hour away by Bus. While it's in the same general area as L'Aquila, it may be far enough away to have avoided damage. I haven't seen anything on this website or others regarding any damage to Civita.
You might send a note to Rick's staff, as I'm sure they would have the best information.
Cheers!
I can't give a specific answer, but we're staying a few days in Passaggio next month. It's much closer to the earthquake site than Civita di Bagnoreggio. I e-mailed our hotel in Passaggio Friday, asking if they had any damage or problems.
They wrote back within 20 minutes (rare for Italian hotels) and emphatically said they didn't even feel the earthquake, and that I didn't need to worry about this (followed by 4 exclamation marks).
So I take this to mean other places in the area are fine, and that they're VERY worried that the bad economy plus the earthquake will kill their 2009 tourist season!
In early June we're booked to spend a night at Civita di Bagnoreggio. You might write Franco at Civita B&B (that's where we're staying) and ask him about the earthquake. The e-mail address I have for him is fsala (at) pelagus.it
Civita is a small enough place that he would probably not mind answering your question even if you're not staying with him.
