Civita di Bagnoegio or Montepulciano??

My husband and I will be driving from Florence to Rome and will have three days to explore the Tuscany hill towns. The first two nights we will be staying in a wonderful bed and breakfast outside San Gimignano., but for our final night we now have to decide between a great hotel in Montepulciano and another wonderful bed and breakfast in Civita di Bagnoregio. Not sure which way to go....Thank you for your thoughts.

I recommend Montepulciano. We enjoyed Montepulciano & although I haven't been to Civita, my understanding is that it's a very small town (smaller than Montepulciano) & not much to do there. Have a great trip.

We've only been to Montepulciano on a day trip out of Siena so it's not really a fair comparison....but we've been to Civita several times. We only stay one night each time at Franco's in Civita although the first time we stayed in Bagnoregio. (We love staying in Civita so we can be the only ones at night and the only ones in the early morning before the other tourists arrive.
I'm guessing that the B&B you are referring to is in Bagnoregio or do you mean Franco's B&B?

If your B&B is in Civita - go there. I bet the night is magic there. It is on our list of "go back and stay a night" places. But if the B&B is in the newer, Bagnoregio, I'd pick Montepulciano, as it is a great town too.

I prefer Civita for its uniqueness.

Montepulciano is really nice, wonderful piazza quiet lanes, a bit steep, but they are hill towns. Try and eat at Ai Quatrro Venti, or Borgo Buio. Ai Quatrro venti has a little better food, but Borgo Buio has awesome atmosphere. The manager reminded me of Dean Martin, and sang for all the guests. You will not be disappointed in Montepulciano. I agree that Civita would be a more unique experience, yet there would be more to see and do in Montepulciano (great wine too). So, I'd say it's win win either way..

Been to both but would would stay in Montepulciano. On a 3 week trip we spent a week at an agriturismo a few miles outside of Montepulciano and did daytrips around the region. Montepulciano is lovely and don't miss San Biagio church. On a different trip we visited Civita, had lunch here and spent an hr. or so wandering around and enjoying the view. Maybe you could stop in Civita on your way to Rome for a bit?
