Civita

Is walking on the bridge to Civita scary? I have issues with heights and am concerned.
May seem like a silly question, but oh well, I will ask anyway.

It is completely subjective. It was not for me. It's not a foot bridge. A car can drive on it. I imagine you are the only person who could decide if it was scary for you. Have you looked at any pictures? If not I would suggest that you google it.

Hi Kathy,
I also have a fear of heights but never felt threatened on the Civita bridge. It is very wide and all cement. The views from it are absolutely amazing. Get your camera ready. The town has not much to offer but to go across this bridge is worth its weight in gold. It was one of our highlights. The biggest fear you might encounter is the people riding bikes down the bridge. They are going pretty fast and you bet not get in front of them. Trust me, you should love it!

I agree with jkc. It is wide enough for a car, probably a small truck, and very stable. As I remember though, it was quite uphill going toward Civita. I was never worried. I have been on those rope passageways over Himalayan rivers and gorges, which swing back and forth as you walk across, and those I did find scary!

Not a silly question at all. I didn't think it was scary but I am not bothered by heights. I kept my eyes leveled on the town and didn't look down! My sister does have some issues but said she didn't experience any discomfort when walking across the bridge into the town. We both felt it was definitely worth the effort. Good suggestion to google it although that won't be exactly the same experience!

I thought it was awful. I do have a fear of heights. I made it over (doing as Andi suggested) and was not sure I would be able to make it back. My brother had to hold my hand. Literally. It was pathetic. I was on the RS Village Italy tour. My brother was on one side and another tour member walked on my other side blocking my view from seeing over. He was actually pretty hilarious as he said when we got near the end - Well, you would live now if you fell. You'd be pretty disabled but you'd be alive!! He was a physician and I burst out laughing. The walkway was a little crowded when we were there and there were of course some small motorscooters zipping over with deliveries. I don't think the pictures in any way give you a sense of the depth. I didn't have any idea until I was in the middle going over that it was that deep.

I have to tell you I will never go over to Civita again. Once you get there it is pretty much deserted as they moved everyone out years ago since the whole chunk of rock is continuously eroding. Lots of feral cats. Views looking over (did not bother me to do that). Musty church (saw much more interesting churches all over Italy).

To give you a frame of reference, I have done the gondolas in Switzerland but I try to sit down and close my eyes. I can make myself do them because the reward is SO great. The views and hikes are astounding.

It's not scary. Going up is harder than leaving. As the road approaches Civita, it becomes steeper. Just take your time - no hurry and stop for a couple of breaks if you need them. There is a good gelato place there. There is also a lovely wine/ microbrew beer "bar." The gelato and wine is very reasonable - cheap. The wine bar has steps that descend down into a naturally cool cellar with tables and candles. We enjoyed getting out of the sun and sipping chilled white wine in the cellar. There are a few outdoor cafe type tables as well. Before you ascend the walkway into civita - you pay a cheap "toll" at the booth located close to the walkway. Civita is like a ruined Roman ranger station with beautiful nature views.
