City of Salerno

My parents, my aunt, and I are going to be in Salerno for a few days in July. Salerno happens to be where our relatives immigrated from and we're going to meet up with some distant cousins for dinner while we're there. Since Salerno isn't a major tourist city the way some of its neighbors are, I was wondering if anyone on the forums happens to have an idea of cafes or restaurants, or any other sites, to visit in Salerno? I'm having trouble looking up online what there is to do in the city of Salerno itself.

And yes, we are planning on taking day trips to Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast while staying in Salerno.

Hi,

Our Family are putting together a trip for Jan next year, which includes four nights in Salerno. (We have never been)

However, happy to share my planning in case it helps.

For our 3 days/4 nights we plan the following

Day one - Day trip to Pompeii and Herculaneum
Day two - Day trip to Paestum (Greek ruins about 1 hour south of the city- They look amazing) -Stop at a Buffalo Cheese tour on the way back
Afternoon - Sightseeing in Salerno - seeing the castle, cathedral and a walk around (We also plan on seeing the Christmas lights)

Check out these links for what to do in Salerno, I think you could get a good days worth of things to do here.

Day three - Trip to Amalfi Coast (You could also do Capri in Summer)

For food, there appear to be heaps of restaurants in the old town. I just venture around google maps and have found a few Pizza and Pasta places. Others might have better recommendations.

We are staying near the Ferry terminal, however, I hear the old town is worth considering.

Please let me know how your trip goes, and any hidden gems you find out. Enjoy your trip.

Have you tried just googling Salerno? You'll get a number of hits. There are some sights and museums worth visiting, plus a fun area of bustling shops and restaurants. I only passed through and it was years ago, so I don't have specific suggestions. I did enjoy a nice lunch at an old school place called Bar Moka.
Try to include Paestum if you can--it's amazing!

We were in Salerno just a few weeks ago. One of our favorite places was a visit to Minerva’s Garden. Lovely and interesting history of Salerno’s prominence in medieval medicine. You can easily spend hours walking through the old city or join the early evening parade of families walking along the sea promenade. Of course there is a beautiful old cathedral also.
