city hotel taxes

Does the Italian hotel tax we pay have to be in cash or is CC accepted?

It depends on the hotel. The issue is that if for example the daily tax (which varies depending on the number of stars and on the municipality) is 5€ a day and you pay by cc, the hotel will get only €5 a day less 2-3% credit card commission. So for example they will get only €4.85 from the credit card, but they still need to give the City the full 5€. That is why some hotels don't want to be paid by credit card.

The same issue, one might say, applies to the daily price of the room, but in that case they can increase the cost of the room rate to make up for the credit card fee, but they cannot increase the price of the tax. That is fixed by the City. Large expensive 4 star hotels generally allow you to pay by credit card, because they make up the 3% cc fee by charging a lot with everything else.

We’ve only had to pay with cash’s a few times -that’s for dozens of hotels over several trips

Regardless it’s wise to have some euro coins or small cash handy for other things as well
