We will be traveling thru Europe in August and spending only three days in the Lake Como area. Can you please suggest which city, either Cernobbio or Menaggio is more interesting. We are a family of four with two older boys
Thank you, Dennis
Hi Dennis,
I've been to Menaggio but not to Cernobbio. My favorite Lake Como town is Varenna.
dennis,
I'd also highly recommend Varenna as a good "home base" for Lago di Como. You didn't say how you'll be travelling to the area, however Varenna is an easy one-hour trip via train from Milano.
Bellagio is nice also, but tends to be a bit more "upscale".
Happy travels!
Of the two you ask about, Cernobbio is too far down the left leg of the lake, the views are constricted--it's not the place or views you've seen in the videos or books. You get the classic postcard views of the lake when you get to the mid-lake area of Vernazza, Bellagio, and Menaggio. Menaggio gets short shrift from Rick, who touts Varenna--but either Varenna or Menaggio are good choices.
Varenna or Menaggio and use the ferries. We just spent a month in Varenna in a rented apartment (Marilena) and loved it. Very relaxing, but we're retired and don't need lots of action.
We loved Varenna and would stay there again.
