cities along train route Rome to Milan

My 3 weeks with gr daught will be up on June 14 and then I have 10 days for myself.

I was thinking of taking local trains, stopping off at an interesting looking place for the night and then going on.

But I would like to research into which towns/villages there might be.

I have had no luck finding anything - towns along the rail route -

Any suggestions?

thnx

As I recall, you are going to be scooting around Italy quite a bit with the granddaughter. You might want to possibly plop down in just a spot or two and kind of unwind a bit.

heh heh, you might be right, but ...

We will be coming from 3 days in CT and that will be rather relaxing. Ash likes the ocean so we probably will be spending some time sunning.

I never had the chance to travel when I was young and this is so exciting for me.

I just thought it would be a real adventure to just take the train and stop whenever something looked good and stay for a nice day or so. And then be on my way.

I really only have about a week to do this gypsy-thing. I want to spend 2 days in Milan before I de-plane, and 2 days in Domodossola gathering old family history. So that leaves me 6 days to be an old teen ager traveling in Italy.

I hope I've mentioned this before, but if you're going to be in Domodosalla, consider spending some time at Lake Orta. Orta San Giulio is a beautiful midieval village.

If you plan on hopping off, staying awhile and hopping back on, be very cautious on how you book your tickets. You can easily do this on a Regionale (R) train as long as you understand a couple of things: 1) although your R ticket is an open ticket and good for 60 days, it's only good for 6 hours after you validate it. 2) When hopping back on, you need to be on a train of equal class (i.e. another R train). If you hop onto a Eurostar class train, you will need to pay the difference which is about double. If a conductor finds you doing this, the fine is about 50Euros (payable instantly). 3) If you book a train that requires a seat reservation (i.e. Eurostar, ICPlus) from Rome to Milan and you get off. The rest of your ticket is lost when the train departs (there are ways within 3 hours to adjust but it's a pain). You can do this if you buy the Eurostar tickets for short distances as you go (i.e. Rome/Orvieto, Orvieto/Chiusi, Chiusi/Florence, Florence/Bologna and so on).

Ahhhh, thanks. I think I was confusing "train tickets" with "train pass"

I don't think what I had in mind will work.

I think I will pick out Domodossola and 2other cities and park there for several days each. I think I will be happy to spend time in one city, or I might be able to bus for a day trip.

Thanks so much. I shudda known that !

On the German Rail website you can search for local trains and select intermediate stops for the ones that are displayed. This will give you what you are looking for.

The regional train tickets are SOOOO affordable - don't let the lack of an on and off pass deter you.

I think the following places are on your route...

Pisa, Via Reggio, Cortona, Cinque Terre...

Have fun

I am looking at Rome, Florence, Lago Orta, Verona, Trasquera and Domodossola.

Probably Trasquera and Domodossola because I know people there, have to choose maybe one more, what a decision to have to make!
