Circumvesuviana vs. Transfer

I will be traveling to Italy in July with my parents (in their sixties). We will fly into Rome and go straight to Sorrento, and I am considering booking a transfer from the Naples train station to Sorrento (I have a quote of 80 €) instead of taking the Circumvesuviana with our luggage. Am I being overly paranoid? We are planning on taking the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii and Naples later that week, I'm just concerned with trying to keep all of their luggage secure if the train is crowded (I travel light, but I have yet to convince them to follow suit). Thank you!

You can keep your luggage with you at the seat. It's just like riding on the subway in Washington D.C. or the "L" in Chicago. You won't need to store them at the end of the carriage like on a high speed train. I would say to save the money and take the train. It's a nice ride and you'll have time to relax and see part of Naples on your way. You'll also be able to see where you'll need to get off for Pompeii when you come back to visit. Donna

Maybe it's because we are getting older but these days we always use a door to door private transfer from Naples to Sorrento. Not from security concerns but the comfort of not lugging baggage around in a crowded place, being met on arrival and sitting back in a comfortable car for the journey wins hands down. It gets us in the holiday mood! 80 euro for the 3 of you is not a bad price. If you need to get a taxi in Sorrento be aware that they are horrendously expensive eg a 5 minute journey averages 12 -15 euro. Compare that to the 80 euro cost for the hour plus journey from Naples to your hotel door!

We used the train from Naples to Sorrento and we had a lot of luggage, well not me as I go with a weekender bag for a whole week but daughter in law, granddaughter had seven pieces of luggage with them, yes seven!! We did not have any problems but we did not travel during rush hour. Train was a little crowded but not too bad. I seem to remember there was a flight of stairs to navigate down to Sorrento train. It was not expensive, maybe 5 euro each.

There is also a ferry option from Naples. You take a quick taxi ride from the train station to the docks and take a relaxing short ferry ride across the bay (your luggage would be with you). I much preferred that over the Curcumve... train from Naples to Sorrento. I didn't have a particularly good ride on that train from Naples to Sorrento but later in my stay I took it from Sorrento to Pompei and it was fine. Just another option.

Thanks for all of the advice - as we will not be traveling during rush hour, I think we will stick with the train and hope for the best. The bus/ferry were tempting choices, but that's just getting to be a lot of transfers in one day!

You will be fine with the train. Another piece of advice we had was to sit near older people who are locals. Have a great trip!!
