Circumvesuviana

We want to train from Naples to Pompeii Scavi, get off see Pompeii, get back on the train and go to Sorrento. When we buy the tickets in Naples, do we buy one ticket to Pompeii, then another in Pompeii to Sorrento, or do we buy a ticket to Pompeii which continues to Sorrento?

Because you are likely to spend time at Pompeii Scavi, buy the Napoli to Pompeii Scavi ticket and a Pompeii Scavi to Sorrento ticket all at one time and just validate your Pompeii Scavi to Sorrento ticket before boarding that train in Pompeii. Don't forget to validate the Napoli to Pompeii Scavi tickets before boarding the train in Naples. The total cost is roughly the same, this is not an expensive train.

I believe it depends on the ticket you buy. If you buy an hourly ticket you'll need to buy two separate tickets, one to Pompeii scavi and then from Pompeii scavi to Sorrento. If you buy a daily ticket you travel the whole day on the one ticket without it expiring before getting to Sorrento. Donna

Looks like it would be cheaper to buy two one hour tickets at 2.80 euro Naples to Pompeii and 2.10 euro Pompeii to Sorrento. The weekday daily ticket for Naples to Sorrento is 12 euro and the weekend rate is 6.30 euro http://www.unicocampania.it/index.php?lang=en¢er=inside&colonna=biglietti&action=3&sw_interscambio=0 Ask if you can buy both at the Naples ticket office, the clock only starts ticking when you validate each one at the begining of each journey.

Do you mean that the train tickets are sold by the time rather than the destination? Thank you for your help.

Sorry , my mind was mixing up the timed tourist tickets (Unico Costiera) you have to use in and around Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast and the ordinary tickets (Unico Campania) used on the Naples - Sorrento train line. My only excuse is that it had gone midnight and I was ready for my bed! What I meant to put over is that there is no problem buying tickets in advance as they only become valid when you validate them at the start of your journey. If you are doing a lot of travelling on consecutive days while you are there, you might like to look at the 3T Unico Campania ticket. Valid for 3 days it covers all public transport, including local rail, in the Campania region and costs 20 euro http://www.unicocampania.it/index.php?lang=en¢er=inside&colonna=turisti&action=3T Once again apologies. Edit - the link for the Unico Costiera tickets - NB you can not use it on the Circumvesuviana beyond Meta di Sorrento, third stop from Sorrento towards Naples. http://www.unicocampania.it/index.php?lang=en&center=inside&colonna=turisti&action=costiera&banner=costiera

Charles, yes and no. The tickets are sold by destination and gives you an hour to get to Pompeii. If you buy a 24 hour ticket you can use it as many times as you wish in 24 hours. They do it this way so people don't buy a ticket to Sorrento and spend 5 hours in Pompeii along the way. You have to buy 2 tickets if you wish to do that. Donna

For clarity's sake, since this way shall I travel soon... These are "1-hour" tickets, OR they are "open-ended" tickets that are good for only 1 hour once validated? I believe the second case is true...? So...as an example...I can purchase a handful of tickets, and only validate them AS I ACTUALLY USE THEM? Just like Paris metro tickets? Except, of course, they are for certain points on the train route (Sorrento - Naples would cost more € than Sorrento - Pompeii Scavi, for instance). So, If I knew EXACTLY where I wanted to travel within a week, I could purchase all of those 'destination specific' tickets at one time, and just validate them immediately before boarding the train (buy Sor-PomScavi & PomScavi-Sor, and Sor-Naples & Naples-Sor, and Sor-Herc & Herc-Sor all at the same time)? Clear as mud? ;-)
