I read that the train was derailed on August 6/10. Does anyone know if it is up and running? Is it busy in September or do you need to prebook seats to get to Pompeii from Sorrento or can you can just walk on?

If it's not running by now, it should be relatively soon. They'd just have to clear the tracks and replace whatever track was damaged.
The Circuimvesuviana is a privately-owned train....it's really a commuter rail service between Napls and Sorrento. So you can't reserve ahead...you just buy when you get to Naples or Sorrento.

The Circumvesuviana people indicated that they would use buses while the train system was down. At this time, I can't see any information on their website about this incident.
You can't pre-book tickets. It's like you local bus. Show up, buy your tickets, get on.
