Cinue Terra accommodations in May

My husband and I are visiting May 14-17 and have not booked a place yet. We thought we would stay in one of the towns as a base. Is it imperative to book ahead or can we wait till we get there? Our price range is about $100 Canadian and we don't need a kitchen. Or are the restaurants very expensive? Are there grocery stores where we can buy picnic food?

Vera, From my experience it WOULD BE a good idea to pre-book accommodations in the Cinque Terre. May could be busy and is only a few months away. You could have trouble finding a place, so you'll need to get cracking and get something booked. Getting a room for Cdn$100 (~€70) could be challenging unless you're willing to stay in a Hostel. Your best bet might be to check Mar-Mar Rooms in Riomaggiore. There are Hostels in Manarola and Corniglia. Yes, there are grocery stores there to buy picnic items. Whether the restaurants are "expensive" is somewhat a matter of opinion. Prices are about the same as many other places in Europe. €50 or more for dinner for two is fairly common (I sometimes spend that much for one). You may find it helpful to have a look at the Italy 2013 Guidebook, as there's LOTS of good information there. The book would be a good reference source to pack along. I'll try and add more information later, when I have a larger screen to work with. Happy travels!

Hi Vera, I am traveling for the first time to the Cinque Terre this May also. I booked Manuels Guesthouse in Monterosso. I can't offer first hand experiences, but here's a few leads from Rick's 2013 guidebook in the $100 price range: Monterosso: Net Room Service (booking agent): http://www.monterossonet.com/eng/ Albergo Carugio: http://www.alcarugio.it Vernazza: Elisabetta Rooms: http://www.elisabettacarro.it Ivo's Camere: http://www.ivocamere.com/index2.html La Marina Rooms: lamarinarooms.com - looks like a good view with a good price. Corniglia:
Il Carugio: http://www.ilcarugiodicorniglia.com There are many other options listed, but that should get you started. Have fun! Happy booking!!

Vera, We, too, are going to the Cinque Terre in May, and we decided to stay at the hostel in Manarola. The website is http://www.hostel5terre.com/ENG/index.html. It looks quite nice, and I read many reviews about it being well run. All of my questions were answered promptly. I checked the website, and they have a private room with two beds and a private bathroom for 65 euro/night, but you have to contact the hostel to see if there is availability. Good luck!
