Hi all, I will be visiting the Cinque Terre during the summer, but I am worried about the eating situation due to my tree nut allergy. I know I need to be careful when eating anything, but what are some of the safer choices when it comes to food? Would it be unusual for the seafood to have nuts? Do they put pesto on pizza?
Pesto (which has pine nuts) would be on Pesto dishes only (generally pasta, but also some focaccias), but the food would say "X al pesto". In any case just tell the waiter (or food vendor) you are allergic to nuts and they will be able to suggest lots of dishes with no nuts.
Hello comeonyouwolves123,
I don't know if it's law but when I was there in September I was surprised how many menus either had explicit notes on the different dishes - gluten content, vegetarian, allergy warnings - or numbers/letters and a large index as to what they meant in the back. Obviously this is less helpful at food stalls or take away places versus sit down meals.
If your Italian is not up to communicating clearly about your allergy I would get some very clear language translated and make sure you have it on your phone, printed on some cards etc to hand to waiters and restaurant staff. Italians are nothing if not hyperconscious about food but communicating the difference between an allergy or a preference is critical.
And not be alarmist but you should consider what to so in case you have a reaction. I don't know if a Farmacia would have what you need but again knowing where you need to go and being able to tell people that in an emergency would be important.
Be safe, have a great trip,

Italian restaurants must adhere to EU guidelines on disclosing allergens. This regulation came into effect in 2014 and covers 14 groups including Tree Nuts, Peanuts, and Sesame. An english explanation is included here: https://www.foodallergy.org/resources/travel-tips-italy
Curiously, pine nuts are not one of the nuts requiring disclosure.
