I was planning on spending 2 nights at CT. A friend ( who spends lots of time in Italy) suggested Portovenere instead. What do you think?

When will you be there? They are so close to each other, I'm not sure it makes a big difference. Time if year could be a factor for hiking in the CT though if that's what you were planning on doing.

Visited Portovenere in July 2009 and it is lovely. We were staying in Vernazza for 4 nights and took the boat here that included a beautiful 40 minute scenic boatride around 3 small islands. We spent a few hours here before taking the boat back. I would probably stay in one of the 5 C.T. villages as the transportation connections are much better. The train does not go to Portovenere so you would have to take a bus from LaSpezia to get here or a boat from one of the C.T. villages and I believe the boats only run from Easter through October. On our oct RS tour of village italy we had a short stop for lunch at Portovenere which is a nice place to visit. We then boarded a boat that passed by all 5 CQT cities. Since the main connections of the 5 cities is by train I would stay in one of the Cinque Terre cities.

We plan on going in June. Is less crowded? More of a working town?
