Hello - I am planning a trip in July to Cinque Terre and will be meeting up with friends in Umbria. What is the best route to Umbria? My husband and I are not really in favor of getting a car and driving a very long way to get there however, if there was a recommendation to visit and stay 1 night on the way there we would be very open to that. Is there any chance that Lucca could be that place? Thank you in advance for all of you help.

Using public transit to go from Cinque Terre to Umbria will likely involve a train via Florence. Where are you going in Umbria? That will dictate where you go next and how you'll get to your final destination.
You can stop for a night along the route. Lucca is definitely a possibility, as is Florence and possibly Siena (depending on where you're headed in Umbria).

Sandy, where are your friends coming from in Umbria? Lucca (and Florence) are in Tuscany and not in Umbria but those may be good meet-up places depending on their location and how willing they are to link up with you partway.
