My family trip to Italy is all planned but now I'm thinking our third leg may be a little too ambitious. How doable is it to travel by train from the Cinque Terre to Bolzano in one day? Best route via Milan or Florence?
That's a long day of travel. What is the rest of your itinerary? Florence and Venice are on the way.
Our route is Rome, Sienna, CT, Dolomites and then flying home from Venice.
Martha: Thanks to Doug's follow-up, I see I misunderstood your question: you want to do CT to Bolzano one way, that's doable in 7 to 8 hours station to station plus the time to get to the CT train station, wait for the train, and then on the Bolzano end getting from the train station to your lodging--sounds like about 9 to 10 hours of travel, hotel to hotel. Have fun in Bolzano, what a beautiful city! It feels like you are in Austria, with everyone speaking German and wurstel and beer on the menu, but you are still in Italy. The white wine from that region is fantastic.
