Cinque Terre to Rome via train with stop

We need to travel to Rome from Riomaggiore in early May, and thought we might have a stop somewhere to break up the day - preferably Florence but would consider Pisa if too difficult.
It seems from the sources I could find that many tickets aren't available (either that or there arent any morning trips out of Riomaggiore) so wanting advice:
1. Which companies run trains this route (or best place to book through)
2. How far out are tickets available
3. Is it easier to buy separate tickets (ie Riomaggiore to Pisa/Florence and Pisa/Florence to Rome)
4. Any other suggestions/advice?

Trenitalia
Buy tix from the actual train company

https://www.trenitalia.com/content/tcom/en.html

Don’t know your dates so can’t help any further but if schedule isn’t out yet just look for same day of week available now
The schedules dont change much

It will be a regional train from CT
Then fast train from Florence to Rome

If you are making a stop buy the tix separately

Hi. The company running most trains is Trenitalia; use their website trenitalia.com. (For a few routes like Florence to Rome, there is also a 2nd company Italo). Looks like full schedules for May aren't loaded yet, just use a similar day in March for now to get the idea; the schedule in May will be similar. Use station names Firenze SMN for Florence and Roma Termini for Rome. Yes, if you plan a stop, buy separate tickets for each leg. No need to buy tickets now; just take a look at the March schedule to get the idea. You will see some trains are 'regional' trains, for those no need to buy tix in advance; price never changes and they can't sell out. For Inter City or Freccia trains, there are discounts to buy in advance, but that locks you in to an exact train / time. Have a great trip!

kcw,

The trip from Rome to Riomaggiore will be at least 4.5 hours, so I'm not sure you have time for an intermediate stop as that would make for a very long travel day. My suggestion would be to travel directly to Riomaggiore and work the other locations into your itinerary later on. On the current schedules, there's a train leaving Roma Termini at 09:57, arriving Riomaggiore at 14:23 (one change at La Spezia Centrale). The schedules may change, so check again closer to your trip. There are other departures at later times.

Regarding your questions.....

  1. Trenitalia is the only option on that route. You can check their website for the details - https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html .
  2. As part of your ticket will involve Regionale trains, I don't think tickets will be available for a month or so. It doesn't matter when you buy Regionale tickets, as they're always the same price.
  3. When you buy tickets, specify your starting point and destination, and you'll be provided with whatever tickets are required for that route. You may be travelling on different types of trains so you may get more than one ticket.
  4. If you haven't travelled by train in Italy before, you may wish to do some research as there are some potentially expensive caveats to be aware of. For example, locally purchased Regionale tickets must be validated (time & date stamped) prior to boarding the train. Failure to do so may result in hefty fines collected on the spot. Also, the express trains (ie: Freccia) have compulsory seat reservations that are specific to train, date and departure time, and can only be used on the one train listed on the ticket.
