Cinque Terre to Orvieto - Train options

I am now looking into train schedules for our trip. One part of the trip we will take the train from Monterosso to Orvieto.

Our option 1 (what Trenitalia suggests) would be Monterosso - Florence - Orvieto. As I looked into other options, I thought maybe we can do Monterosso - Siena - Orvieto. It seems like the regional train from Siena to Orvieto passes through small towns in Tuscany like Arbia and Asciano. It will add 1 hour extra travel time for the trip. We will not be spending time in Tuscany towns so I thought it may be neat to pass through the area.

Is the scenery worth the extra time? Or should we just go for the faster route?

Thank you for your help!

Shirley, we went from Orvieto to CT via Florence. Worked well except that it was a holiday and trains were fewer, so we were delayed an extra hour or so. The train station was not in an area to explore with luggage. Siena could be neat if the station is convenient and you have a few hours to explore, and you're not in a hurry.

The Siena train station is not conveniently located with respect to the historic center.

Thanks for the quick reply.Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. We are not planning to go into Siena, probably go to the mall/stores near the station to get something to eat and use the restroom.

Is this a crazy idea? I just thought Maybe the train ride from Siena to Orvieto would be more scenic.

It's my experience that the areas of town the train stations are located in aren't very scenic. The countryside between stops was though. Can't speak to which route is more scenic because I've only taken the one route.

When I recently drove inland between Lucca and Volterra, for instance, the flat farmland scenery was much less interesting and iconic than the winding roads around Montepulciano. I can't speak to the specific scenery from the train routes, but with just an hour difference, I'd be willing to try the slower one.

Thank you for the suggestions. After looking at google map, we've decided to take the more direct train. Julie, thank you for letting us know about the food situation. We will be sure to pack our own lunch. Thanks again!
