Cinque Terre to Carrara then to Rome - How much time will be required?

In October I will be in Cinque Terre and am traveling to Rome. How much time would I need to stop in Carrara on the way to Rome for a tour of the marble quarry? Do trains run often? I would prefer not to arrive in Rome too late in the evening.

You can easily do this. Ticket #1 - Take a regional (R) from the CT to Carrara. This will take about 45 minutes. Don't take the ICPlus train as it doesn't stop at Carrara. Also, you need seat reservations on the ICPlus. Ticket #2 - Carrara to Rome via Florence. Spend whatever time you need at Carrara (probably an arranged tour) and then jump on the R to Florence and change to a Eurostar (seat reservations required). It's about 4.0hrs for this second leg.
