We are planning a trip from Cinque Terre (probably Vernazza) to Barcelona. We have found an overnight train that originates in Milan. It also stops in Torino, so we think that may be a closer trip from Vernazza and we will catch it there. If anyone has recently done this trip, please let me know for sure though! (Milan vs Torino?)
My real question is about what train pass I should purchase. My husband and I want to get the Italy-only country pass, since most of our travel is in Italy, with just a final trip over to Barcelona before our flight home. I've been looking at the Eurorail site, and think that this is a qualifying pass for this route, however I am having trouble confirming this. So far I have received 3 different answers--we need the 3-country pass with Italy, France and Spain; the Italy only is ok; and we just need the Italy-Spain pass. One Eurorail agent told me we had to have the 3-country pass, but after I asked more question, she confirmed with the "rail expert" and then said that the Italy only was ok after all!! My AAA travel agent told me we need the Italy-Spain pass so we don't have to pay extra fees.
I understand that normally your pass needs to cover all countries that you travel through, but I think this train has special rules. Although I don't want to overspend on a pass we don't need, I'm more worried about not having the proper pass and having to pay more at the last minute. Does anyone know the REAL facts on this overnight train? It's the Salvidor Dali night train. Any info is greatly appreciated!
