Cinque Terre solo - where to base?

Visiting my daughter in Florence next week and decided to do a 2-night side trip to Cinque Terre (a bucket list item). Still getting the hang of solo travel after losing my husband a year+ ago. I’ll head up on a Tuesday and return on Thursday (timed to avoid cruise ship visitors).

In which town should I base myself? Rick Steve’s Best of Europe 2024 only lists accommodations in Monterosso al Mare and Vernazza, but not the other three towns. I’d like to stay in an area where it’s lively — not looking for solitude. A hotel or pensione with a communal gathering area (for breakfast or views) would be preferable. Any/all suggestions are welcome!

You will have somewhat limited choices due to the timing - Cinque Terre books far ahead. Your experience will be enjoyable in any of the villages. Monterosso is the larger town and Vernazza the most crowded. Personally, I'd look at Manarola and Monterosso with a side glance at nearby Levanto. Look at booking.com and use their filters to find different types of places in your price range, then read the reviews to see if any suit you.

I would recommend Levanto only because our Rick S. tour stayed there. It is a regular beach town with little huts for dressing. It had nice restaurants and the Villages were only a short train ride away.

I like Manarola or Monterosso as well. Hotel Villa Steno would be an ideal option in Monterosso.

I've stayed in Monterosso al Mare three times and Levanto once....all on RS tours. I like Albergo Pasquale which is right on the beachfront in the old town and is owned by the same family as Villa Steno. When I was last there in 2022 the old Mom and Dad (younger than me, hahaha) were still running Pasquale and are very kind to solo women. I'd be good staying at Villa Steno as well as I understand they have a wonderful rooftop terrace.

I liked Levanto the least and was indifferent to the other hotel I stayed in in Monterosso. The sea views from Pasquale are wonderful!

If you stay at Pasquale, I recommend getting a limoncello spritz at their small bar and sitting at one of the terrace tables. Oh wow.

We have also stayed in both Levanto and Monterosso Al Mare and prefer Monterosso. But considering how crowded the area gets, you are probably going to have some problems just finding a place at this very late date. As suggested, booking.com and getting back with a few that sound appealing to see if anyone has stayed there. Good luck to you!

It's likely already booked up but I'll throw in Hotel La Spiaggia in Monterosso. Family-owned, close to the beach, easy walk from the train station and restaurants, and has an elevator. Also has a breakfast room, large shared patio and small bar.

Thank you everyone for the quick guidance! Looks like I have several good choices:

Monterosso al Mare: Holel La Colonnina, La Spiaggia, Hotel Souvenir, Hotel Margherita
Manarola: The Manarola Sea View
Riomaggiore as well: Scorci Di Mare, Luna di Marzo

The list is not exhaustive of course, but I could be happy with any of these. Not sure if it's better to stay at the south end closest to La Spezia (where I'll be picking the CT train) or better to stay north and venture south. Either way, I'll do my best to visit each town. Now I just have to pick one. I know one of you recommended La Spiaggia and a friend recommended Scorci Di Mare. Any other thoughts?

Pam had recommended Albergo Pasquale in Monterosso as well as Villa Steno. From her post above:

" I like Albergo Pasquale which is right on the beachfront in the old town and is owned by the same family as Villa Steno. But the clock is ticking on booking anything at all in this VERY popular part of Italy at this late date so put your giddyup on!!! If all of our recommendations are booked up, see if anything is available on booking.com.

lisa,

It's likely that Rick's Italy book would list accommodation suggestions for all five towns.

Given your critieria, I definitely think that Monterosso would be the best choice. The town has two separate parts, an old town and a new town, so it tends to absorb the crowds a bit better than the others. For accommodations, I would absolutely recommend two of the hotels that have already been mentioned, Hotel Villa Steno and Hotel Pasquale. Both are in the old town. Villa Steno is at the top of the old town, and has fantastic views from the balcony off the lobby, as it overlooks the ocean. It's great to sit there in the late afternoon with a Spritz (or whatever) and enjoy the views. The rooms are always very clean, and the owners are wonderful. However at this point it may be very difficult to get reservations in either place, given the fact that you'll be there next week.

If you're unable to get a room in the old town, you could also look at Hotel Villa Adriana, which is at the end of the new town - https://www.villaadriana.info/en/index.php . I've stayed there in the past and found the rooms to be clean and comfortable. It's been a few years and hopefully nothing has changed. They served a nice breakfast, and it has a pool.

Monterosso also has some nice restaurants and Cantina di Miky (by the train station) is a big favourite with many here (including me). Don't confuse that with the more posh Miky restaurant, although that's a good option too.

Two nights isn't much time to explore the five towns, although I suppose a rush visit is better than none. Three nights would be better.

I apologize if I was remiss in acknowledging the specific people who recommended Villa Steno and Albergo Pasquale. Neither seem to be on Booking.com or other search engines, but I did submit their online request forms. Kate suggested La Spiaggia, which IS available, but is in the new town. That's not a deal breaker, but I'd rather be in the old town. Assuming the first two will not be able to accommodate me, I guess I'll go with La Colonnina which is in Rick's 2024 Best of Europe guide. I truly appreciate your feedback!
