Cinque Terre+shoes

Will be going to Cinque Terre on a Rick Steves tour. Know about the flip flop ban, but can you wear sandals out to dinner? Can you wear sports sandals such as Teva, Chacos, etc. when on the trails? These worked fine when walking the Camino on the Basque region tour. Thanks.

Yes you can wear sandals to dinner, but on a rocky trail they could be a problem.

A quick google search indicates that no flip flops, sandals, or pumps are allowed on the trails between the towns (fines range from 50-2500 euros depending on the intensity of a rescue mission). There were too many rescues for unprepared hikers.

From the Park website: IMPORTANT: OPEN FOOTWEAR AND/OR SMOOTH SOLES, I.E. NOT ANTI-SLIP (SUCH AS VIBRAM TYPE) ARE FORBIDDEN. THE TRANSGRESSORS WILL BE PUNISHED ACCORDING TO PARAGRAPH 2, ARTICLE 30, LAW 394/91 AND SS.MM.II
"On the trails it is compulsory to wear closed, waterproof and ankle covering shoes, with an anti-slip sole."

It's really all about safety on the trails, not fashion in town.

Hi,
We were there for a week last October. We wore light hiking boots on the trails and were glad we did so. For dinner I wore sandals and my husband wore tennis shoes. Even when Traveling between towns on train or boat I recommend tennis shoes or supportive sandals. It can be a steep climb from transport to the towns. Enjoy! We LOVED it there.
