cinque terre/rome

Hi All, I will be heading from Cinque Terre to Rome via train. I was wonedering if there is a spot in between that would be worth while staying a night in, or if I should directly go to Rome. Also, while is Rome, is it worth while visiting the islands? I'll be there in MAy. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you!

From Cinque Terre to Rome you can take two routes. Via Florence or the coastal route. It really depends on what you have visited before. Tuscany is in between, so there is a lot to see. On the coastal route you will go through Versilia (beaches), Apuania (marble quarries of Carrara), Pisa, Grosseto and Maremma, Tarquinia etc. Not exactly sure which island you are referring to? Ponziane? Sardinia? Tuscan Archipelago? Gulf of Naples?

A lot depends on how much time you have to make an extra stop along the way. First, the train journey from the CT to Rome takes 4.5hrs-5.0hrs. One of the fastest runs of the day is a direct high-speed that departs La Spezia at 08:10 and arrives in Rome at 11:50. Fares begin at 21.40 Euro. This routing goes down the west coast to Civitavecchia and the east into Rome. If you wish to overnight somewhere, you could take a longer route via a train change in Pisa and head for Tuscany and stay in Siena. Or, change trains at Pisa and go to Florence and change trains again for Orvieto which is an hour by train from Rome. All of this routing keeps you on the train.
