Cinque Terre report and Trains

Just when we wondered how the trains could be controlled on such short segments, we found out. The controls stand at the end of the platform as you exit and check your tickets there. Yes, we did see some people get caught without tickets or they had forgotten to validate them. Either way, a nasty shock for them. Some trains a bit crowded, others not. Hint-go to the far end of the platform to board as most want to stay right where they come up from the stairways.
As to being in the Cinque Terre-loved it. We stayed in Manarola, arriving mid afternoon. Had a nice dinner (reservations are a MUST!). First day we took the pesto class at Nessun Dorma. Really fun. Great cold plates served-a meat/cheese, plus vegetarian and I think they had vegan too-not sure on that one. Took the train to Monterosso, caught the ferry to Portonovere where we took an hour to wander a bit, then boarded the ferry to La Spezia. Train back to Manarola for take out from Takeaway Pasta-yum.
Tuesday we took the 9:10 bus to Volastra and hiked the trail to Corniglia-had lunch-then continued on to Vernazza. When they say wear the proper shoes-DO. It’s rocky and dusty, plus there are lots of ups and downs. Solid soles are necessary too. We saw any number of people who were not exactly equipped to be there- sloppy shoes, open toed, no water and clothing I wouldn’t want to hike in, but maybe a swing skirt and cropped top are okay with them. The sun was a bit brutal and it was obvious many were without sunscreen. It is not a ‘walk’ in the park. Train back from Vernazza. Another dinner with a reservation in Manarola. Next day we took the train to Vernazza and hiked the majority of the trail to Foce Drignana. Took our lunch with us. Walked back down, took the train to Riomaggiore for a very short look because my husband knew he had been to one of the towns in 1979. Riomaggiore was the one. Then back to Vernazza for dinner. Departure today-Thursday.
Were there a lot of people? Definitely during the day, but not until 10:00 or so in the morning and the crowds were gone by 5:30. Because we hiked during the day, we hardly had much contact with the masses. Does it detract? Yes. They are there for a quick look see, buy a souvenir and off to the next town. Since we knew it would be crowded we worked around it and got some feel of how truly wonderful the area is.
All restaurant, cafe and bar staff were very pleasant and welcoming. I would go back again and spend even more time. Plan your time well and the crowds will be little bother.

Thanks for this! We're heading there in 2 weeks for 3 days, so it's nice to read about your experiences.

Thank you. I loved reading about your trip.
We are so undecided on whether to take a day trip to Tuscany or cinque terre.
I think we would probably do it with a private driver. I guess cinque terre is best done on your own, after reading your post. What would you say?
Any advice?
