I will be staying in Vernazza for two nights in mid May and have another night in the CT but will have to move accommodation as they are full. Should I leave it till I get there or book accommodation now? Have found a nice room in Riomaggiore. Any ideas? Thank you
Book now. I was there in early May and it was very crowded - in my opinion, it's better to have something lined up so you don't have to worry about it. So then you can focus on the scenery and limoncello! (the latter of course makes the scenery a bit blurry).
I agree, figure it out now. I was there about 4 or 5 years ago in May. I was concerned because I thought there would be no one there and nothing to do. Boy was I wrong. We got off the train and I lost my husband in the masses. It was the opposite of what we were anticipating. I can only imagine that CT continues to become a more popular destination.
We spent a week in CT last Fall. We thought, as Rick says in his books, that we could find a place if we showed up. Oh my...that was not the case. We struggled to find accomadations.
I would suggest booking ahead and staying in Riomaggiore for your third night. We stayed two nights there and enjoyed it.
We took the boat trip from there to Monterosso and the train back one day. Incredible picture opportunity. Also the hiking is so easy from Riomaggiore to the next two villages. There is a cafe on route.
Vernazza was our favorite place. Riomaggiore our second. You will love it there.
We found the places we stayed in Rick Steves Italy book. Riomaggiore was less expensive.
PS. We met a lot of Australians and New Zealanders in CT. Incredibly friendly and interesting people.
Good luck.

Thanks so much for your input. I emailed Labaiadirio and they were so nice in their email I was happy to book with them. Your advice confirms that this is the way to go. Thank you for your time.
I had no problem finding an apartment for my family of five on no-notice in October.
I'm not big on reservations because I like leaving flexibility. I book my first and last day of my trip. In between I call ahead to see what's available.
I don't ever want to come home saying, "They were going to have a festival there the next day, it's too bad we had to leave so we could make our reservations." or "We were invited to a wedding by a local family, but we had to leave because we had reservations somewhere else."
I always have a good idea of my itenerary but it's not unusual to leave a day earlier or stay a day later at any stop if we'll enjoy ourselves more by changing.
