We will be picking up our car in Nice and driving for 14 days to CT and Tuscany/Umbria and back to Geneva to fly home. Please tell me about the parking situation in CT..is there a parking lot? a shuttle? what is best place to stay with a car? Thanks very much
Monterosso is the only town in the Cinque Terre that has a parking lot within the town. Just north of the CT is the town of Levanto. There is parking there near the train station. Once or twice an hour there is a train running south that arrives in Monterosso in about 5 minutes.
There are parking lots up hill from most towns, with shuttles down to town (don't leave anything in your car). I believe the shuttles are included in your Cinque Terre Card, but I'm not sure. Rick's guide has more information. You won't want or need your car at all during the time you are in Cinque Terre - use the trains, trails and boats.
The shuttle IS included in the CT pass.
If you stay at Villa Steno in Monterosso, you can park your car in the small hotel parking lot for free. However, Villa Steno is expensive (145 euro) but I guess it depends on your budget. My wife and I regard it as a worthwhile splurge. We park the car in the lot and leave it unused for the entire stay. If you do this, please note that Villas Steno asks you to call the morning of your arrival to reserve a spot. Other than this convenience, driving a car around CT would be crazy.
