Cinque Terre or Lake Como with an 8-year-old?

I'm still working on finalizing our May Italy trip, with many thanks to folks who have responded to my other thread! I think we'll cut out the Amalfi Coast, start in Rome and do Rome, Florence (day trips to Siena and Lucca), EITHER CT or Lake Como (day trip to Milan) and then on to Venice (day trips to Padua and Verona).

I've read all about CT being crowded, but have always wanted to visit. With an 8-year-old though, which destination would be better--CT or Lake Como? (I've read other threads on the subject, but none mention travelling with young-ish children).

From your previous thread, I think you're going from Venice to either Como or CT? If yes, then I would go to Como because the train ride to CT would be way too long. Also, instead of doing a day trip from Como to Milan, I would stay in Milan for one night and then on to Florence because Milan is between Como and Florence. Spending the night in Milan would allow you to see the Duomo at night which is nice. Finally, I would do the day trip to Padua but probably wouldn't do the one to Verona to allow more time in Venice.

Thanks, Marco! I'm actually considering starting in Rome and ending in Venice, so either CT or Lake Como could work. Thanks the advice re: Milan!

I see you have reversed the order of your trip.

Have you looked at what time your flight would be leaving Venice and what the logistics are to get to the Venice airport.

I vote Lake Como

I think it all depends on what you consider crowded. CT is busy during the day and then is mostly empty at night. May the water is going to be chilly in both locations if you are looking for swimming.

We had to make the same decision and decided on lake como. We absolutely loved it. We had young adult children with us and they loved it too. Now of course we didn’t go to CT to compare but would definitely recommend.

The ferries are really fun. I would think would be very memorable for an 8 year old.

I travel with an 8 and 9 year old. Of course that age juggles every year but the one constant is that they love every place they have been. Just go where you want to see the most! Kids will love it and so will the adults. I gave up trying to placate the kids a few years ago. The outcome is still the same.
