Cinque Terre or...???

Hi all:

So I am rethinking my plans a bit... we are cruising in the middle of our land portion of the trip. Two of our stops are La Spezia and Civitavecchia.

For La Spezia, we are hitting Pisa/Lucca the next week, don't want Florence, so we were going to spend the day in the CT. I have always wanted to go there, looks so beautiful. But I read someone's trip report from some cruise, and they ended up taking a ferry to Lerici, and said it was great. Saw a NY Times article that said it's like the CT before all the tourists hit it... So now I am wondering, I am one of the dreaded cruise ship day visitors to CT... will it just be totally overrun and too touristy and should consider a little sleepier place? Probably will be my only chance at CT as we are hitting lots of Italy this trip and will likely focus on other countries when we make it back. Or is CT still great and I should just stop questioning and go for it?

If we did something else other than CT - like hit the beach in Lerici - we could always do something else at the Civitavecchia stop... not going to Rome as we are going there after the cruise as well. We are planning to just go down to the beach at Santa Marinella, but maybe there is something else awesome that I haven't discovered...

Maybe I am just 6 weeks out from the trip and all planned out and bored.... :) Don't know!

Thanks for any ideas!

Lerici is nice, but if the Cinque Terre is what you really want to see, that is where you should go. Besides Lerici is also full of tourists, just not American tourists, who generally know only of the Cinque Terre, but lots of Italian and European tourists are there nevertheless. The NYT reporter must not have been to Lerici in Summer, when I used to go. It all depends on what time of the year you are going. In July and August, it's just as packed as everywhere else, actually more than the Cinque Terre since Lerici has a much nicer beach than the CT.
