Cinque Terre, Naples and Sicily

I am thinking about traveling to Italy in October. I definatly want to go to Sicily and I figure that the Amalfi coast is also in the plan. Would I be spending too much on travel if I tried to work the Cinque Terre in on the same trip? I still do not know where I am flying in and out of.
Next question, I am traveling alone, will public transportation be sufficient in Sicily?

i agree that more information would be helpful, unfortunatly I have not planned any further than this. I am going to try to take 3 weeks, I am also considering Greek Islands,Croatia, and possibly a return visit to Venice. So as you can see I seriously need to narrow things down. I guess I am just looking for some ideas.

Depends on how long you'll be in Italy, Lori. Covering Sicily north to Cinque Terre...well, I'd plan on about 3 weeks for that kind of breadth, unless you want to spend nearly all of your time on trains and buses. But if you're more in the two-week range, I'd fly into Sicily and out of Naples, spending 4-6 days in Sicily, and the rest in Sorrento/Amalfi Coast/Capri area, with maybe a night or two in Naples, flying out of there. Sorrento is a great home base for Capri, Amalfi, and Pompeii, and close to Naples for departure. And Sicily really needs a car to do it justice.

It appears from your itinerary that all of your journey thus far, except for the CT, is south of Naples. There's a lot of distance between Naples and the CT. It's about 7.0hrs each way by train.

It's difficult to offer more advice without knowing how long you will be in Italy and if you plan on visiting other cities. A bit more detail would help.

Public transport, bus especially, is good in Sicily. Start in the Cinque Terre, so fly to Milan, Genova or Pisa. Then fly Pisa to Catania or Palermo. You don’t have time to waste on long train rides, and flights are cheap on the low cost airlines. Fly Catania back to Naples. Meridiana flies from Naples to Athens, and my Air flies from Athens to Venice. See Croatia from Venice.
