Hi Cheryl. All five CT towns plus Levanto are good choices, depending on your preferences. Suggest you get the Rick Steves book at bookstore or library - each town is described, and you can choose according to your priorities.
Enjoy your trip!

Cheryl, I agree with Bob. The Guidebook has good descriptions of each of the five towns, so that should help you choose. My preference lately has been Monterosso. It's the largest of the five, so has a good choice of hotels and restaurants and the best sandy beach. The crowds should be subsiding somewhat by October, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding accommodations. However, if there's a particular hotel you prefer, it would be a good idea to book early. Happy travels!

all five towns are charming but I like Monterosso for the beach and more restaurant choices

Cheryl,
All 5 towns offer plenty of charm. Beware that the walking trail between Manarola, Corniglia, and Vernazza may be closed due to last years landslide. The beach in Monterossa was great and if we had to do it all over again would probably stay there. Scott

"Beware that the walking trail between Manarola, Corniglia, and Vernazza may be closed due to last years landslide." At the present time, all of the Sentiero Azzuro trails are open except the Manarola - Corniglia section. The first trail from Monterosso to Vernazza is the most challenging, so I'd suggest doing that one first while you're well rested!
