Cinque Terre in winter

Hi all, Has anyone been to CT in winter? Is it worth a visit in January while we are in Italy or will a lot of it be closed during the colder months? Also, our travel agent said that CT could be done as a day trip from Verona - is this a practical day trip, anyone attempted it?
Thanks in advance!!

You need a new travel agent. A train from Verona to the Cinque Terre would take hours. January would not be an ideal time to visit. Much of the CT will be shut down while the restaurant and hotel owners take well-deserved breaks in warmer climes.

I agree with Doug! You can make a better choice than the CT for a January visit.

thanks for your replies! I had thought the same thing but wanted to see if anyone had heard differently! We'll leave CT until another trip when it's warmer

What would be a better option for a December visit? Just looking for somewhere scenic and festive to spend xmas week.

Ears, I noticed on your other post everyone so far has suggested Rome, despite the fact that you said you do not want to stay in a big city. You might consider small to mid-size towns like Lucca, Siena, Orvieto, Verona. Try Google to see if any of these (or others) is particularly proud of or known for their Christmas festivities. AngelofMusic, it would be a 5-hour trip from Verona to CT (each direction), so your travel agent is way off. If you are much closer (staying in Pisa, for example) you could visit for a day to see the spectacular scenery, but many services will not be available.
