Cinque Terre - in the rain next week?

I am headed to Lucca on Sunday and right now the forecast says rain the first 4 days I'm there (really hope it changes). We have a lot of day trips planned - one to Cinque Terre. Is it still worth going in the rain?

Wait and see if the rain that is forecast actually happens. I would not do a daytrip there in the rain. What would you do there? Hike? Some of the trails are still closed, and other areas may still be unstable and susceptible to sliding when it rains. And while it is actually raiing you won't see much in the way of views. But if you do get a clear day then go for it.

Sarah, You may not be able to avoid rain, even if you decide to stay in Lucca. I was there in late September last year and a storm rolled-in late one afternoon, and released a torrential downpour of "biblical proportions". Even with my trusty Rick Steves Umbrella, on a 10-minute walk to a restaurant both sleeves and both pant legs were soaked to the knee. I've never seen anything like it! This occurred almost exactly a month before the floods that ravaged the Cinque Terre, so I have a good idea what that was like. My forecast for Monterosso only goes as far ahead as Sundy, and that does show rain, with a high temperature of 20?C. In the same situation, I'd probably take the day trip and hope for the best. While you won't be able to hike the trails in the rain, a leisurely walk on the Via dell'Amore is certainly possible. You can stay dry by using the local trains to get to each of the towns. Happy travels!

Sarah, The Cinque Terre is definitely more enjoyable without rain, and forecasts are just forecasts. Last year, when I looked at the 10-day forecast right before our Amalfi/Capri vacation, rain was predicted for most days. What happened? We only had the slightest little bit of rain (more of a mist) for about three hours on one day..........the rest was sunny and pleasant. I wish you the same luck. Pack an umbrella, a rain jacket.......but also have the attitude that IF it does rain, at least you are somewhere wonderful nonetheless. And, I once had an entire Caribbean vacation (rain was not predicted) get totally rained out.....then the sun came out as were at the airport to fly home. Weather is fickle.

Sarah, you are from San Francisco and worried about a little rain? By all means, don't miss the CT, whatever the weather.

@Bob...yep I am. I live in the East Bay and it doesn't rain from April until the fall - when it does I don't go anywhere. I admit I am a baby about the rain big time. I just wondered if the sights there are worth seeing/trails and ferry accessible if it rains. I am hoping To have the same luck and it doesn't rain like they said...right now forecasting 70% chance for 4 days. Ugh!

Sarah, I am not a whimp about rain but on my trip this time two years ago, we couldn't walk the trails because it rained for 3 or 4 days without letting up much. They closed all but one of the trails due to mud. Even the trains were completely stopped for a bit. Having said that, like others have mentioned, weather is unpredictable. One day I'll return.

Long range forecasts are horrible, just don't believe them. We just got back and we had great weather. The long range forecast before we went called for rain for most of the time. And, just remember, despite clouds and rain that may come from time to time you are still in beautiful italy
