We are going to be in Italy over Thanksgiving and trying to decide if we should spend a day or two in Cinque Terre. I understand its more of a beach community so I'm wondering if this would be a good destination in what could be a colder time of year. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.
The Cinque Terre is probably more accurately described not so much as a "beach community" but rather as a place to hike on the steep hillsides and hike around and between the five villages--although the beaches are part of it. And for these reasons, you're guess is right that it's primarily an outdoor place and late November is not the best time to go when you have alternative destinations in Italy that offer a better range of things to do and enjoy at that time of the year.
The weather should be fine for hiking, but not for getting tanned. As Kent said, CT is more a hiking area along the sea. I know that the boats stop running beging with September, so I guess then it starts to be windy.

The Cinque Terre is cold and rainy in November through March. Expect to wear insulated jackets on the coast during that time of year. That being said, you might luck out with a warmer day, but generally that's winter for this area.
As other posters have mentioned, if you plan to go because you want to hike, that's one thing, but also not advised during the rainy season. There are no beaches to speak of....only a small one in Monterrosso.
Also, this is a tourist area (thanks Rick) so in November several shops close down as the town empties of visitors. The towns will be locals only, which might make for a nice quiet visit.
IMO, I'd skip this in November. You want to see the CT in it's glory and hike the trail, or take a boat ride if not into hiking, to see the picturesque views.
We were there for our Daughter's birthday, October 26, and the weather was really nice. I imagine it will get cooler in November and the chance of rain will increase.
It's not really a beach community in the classic sense. They are small towns on the ocean and the main attraction is enjoying the slower pace. It's not a place that people go to lay out on the beach and get sun.
I can see rain making it less enjoyable. Cooler weather, within reason, won't keep you from enjoying the atmosphere.
Thanks everyone, we'll hit it on the next trip.
We were just there, and stayed in Monterosso.I'd go at that time of year for sure, but of course you won't be swimming. There are lots of restaurants, shops and bars, and the hiking would be spectacular that time of year. Also cooler!
Have fun.
