I know it's the worst time of year to be there, but we are thinking about going the first week of August (my husbands job will only let him travel in August so if I want to see CT and coastal Italy that's my only choice). Has anyone been in August? Will it be as bad as Disney world for spring break or will it be slightly more bearable? Also going to lake como or Garda. Thanks!
Would be interested in stayin. In another town in the area if anyone has suggestions that are less touristy!
The first week of August is the peakest of the peak season.
The issue is not so much the crowds, as those will be there anywhere you go, the issue is to be able to find accommodations anywhere near a body of water in that period. I always rented vacation homes in the Forte dei Marmi area, and always needed reservations well in advance for August. Take a look and book fast (and that is true on the lakes too) if you go this year. August is only 5 weeks away.
Are you thinking for this August? Accommodations may be hard to come by at this point as places book up months ahead for summer...probably either really cheap places or really expensive...you may luck out. We've been there twice in mid-sept...almost the same days. First time was a Mon-tues (08), second was a weekend (2012). It was def much busier on the weekend, but CT gets more popular and overrun every year, so not sure how much had to do with it being a weekend vs being a more popular destination in the intervening 4 years.
You may find something not in CT proper and can use the train to go in.
As long as you prepare yourself for crowds, you can prob handle it. If our first visit to CT had been as crowded as our second visit, well, we wouldn't have had a second visit, as the crowds were very disheartening, especially on the trains/train platforms.
Just to recommend a website...we used arbaspaa.com to book both our stays. They have everything from rooms to hotels, b&bs, guest houses, farm stays...and also do tours - wine, scenic flights and boat rides. You can try putting in Your budget and type of accommodation and see what comes up, or get in touch with them. And it isn't just the CT villages, but towns and villages all in that area. They were very quick getting back to me. We actually stayed in the same place in Corniglia both times, just different rooms.
