We are considering going to the Cinque Terre this April. Should we plan on it being very crowded? Also, any recommendations for a good town with reasonable rooms for 2?
Becky,
If you want a larger town with a nice beach, there are lots of choices for lodgings in Monterosso al Mare. If you'd prefer a smaller town, any of the others are good (although Corniglia is on top of a bluff, so not as popular).
The Italy Guidebook has listings for a good selection of lodgings in each of the five villages, and website addresses are usually shown so you can have a look at each place before booking.
Happy travels!
Turns out we would be in Cinque Terra April 24 to 26, over the Liberation Day holiday. Should we expect it to be pretty crowded? Would we have trouble getting onto the hiking trails? I'm sure we'd have to prebook a room.
Disregard what Steve says about liberation day (and labor day as well).
Neither are a big travel day.
Liberation day celebrations are local and take about as long as a 4th of July parade at home, if that much even. They're just a short ceremony in the main square. Absolutely nobody goes from Town A to Town B to see one.
Labor day in the really big cities might have demonstrations that are longer and bigger, but again, they have no impact on what you'll be doing.
We will be in the CT at the same time. We are staying in Manarola because it sounds like it's lovely, but a little quieter than Vernazza. We have booked an apartment with www.acasa5terre.it which has had great reviews. Our apartment is 130 euros with a balcony overlooking the shore. Can't get much better than that! : )
