Its all safe. Just stayed in Monterosso at the Hotel Souviner, 43 euros a night. You'll love the CT, Make sure you hike the whole trail.

Just remember that these " cities " have less then 1,000 residents. Plenty of clean, safe rooms abound for about 65-85 E a night. Breakfast not included.

We just got back from the Cinque Terre and stayed in Vernazza in a room we rented from Elisabetta Carro via email [email protected]. This was recommended in Rick's 2007 book and we loved it. 65euros/night includes a comfortable bed, private bath, rooftop patio with an amazing view. Ask for the room with the patio upstairs. Just be prepared for lots of steps (112 to our room !) Lots of people rent rooms and I don't think you can really go wrong anywhere since the town is so small and intimate. Have fun!

If you want fewer steps and can live without a great view terrance, try Memo Rooms in Vernazza. Just stayed there in September and my room was very nice. Some rooms overlook the main street, but it's quiet until about 8:00am when the vendors begin making deliveries. Don't believe Enrica has e-mail, so you must call to reserve and then call back one week before arrival to confirm.

Look at Hotel Margherita in old Monterosso. It's up the hill about 400 yards from the harbor and about a 15 minute walk from the train station, although it may take longer because you'll keep stopping to look at the view. Here's the info....

HOTEL MARGHERITA
Via Roma, 72
19016 MONTEROSSO AL MARE (SP)
tel. +39 0187/808002 fax. +39 0187/818392
e-mail: [email protected]

Good hotel with big rooms. There were three of us and all they had was a quad, two king beds for 180 euros which included breakfast for all of us.

There were rooms available as you walk through the towns, but better to call ahead to get one. Use Rick's new Italy 2008 for some telephone numbers.

Lori, I used Mar-Mar Rooms in Riomaggiore and was really pleased with the room I had. It wasn't a "Hotel", but rather just a room. Meals were eaten in the local restaraunts. The room was good value.

You could also have a look at La Torretta in Manarola. I believe it's a B&B, and I've heard some good reports on it.

Cheers!

Lori
We stayed at Locanda del Sole in Riomaggiore, reasonably priced 85E? I think. Very friendly staff, comfy with breakfast. We plan to use them again..

My wife and I stayed with Franco at Ca de Capun in Manorola and enjoyed every minute. The cafe downstairs is wonderful for morning pastries and coffee. Franco doesn't speak much English, but if you use www.acasa5terre.com(also great for rooms in other 5terre towns), Claudio and Nicola speak plenty. Otherwise, Franco can be reached at [email protected], or his cell @ 340-2635589. Manorola is quiet and relaxed and beautiful. Make sure you eat at Marina Piccola at least once. You can't go wrong pretty much anywhere, except maybe too close to the station in Riomaggiore. Enjoy!

Monterosso would be my pick. It's flater , a little spread out and a little bigger the the other towns. More places to eat and have drinks. Beach is bigger and nicer.

I reserved a room for 3 nights from Elisabetta in May for our September stay. We where guaranteed a room with terrace, private bath and ocean view. Two weeks before we arrived she informed me that the ocean view room was only available for 2 of the 3 nights we had reserved and we where to stay at her Mother's house. At this point it was too late to find another place so agreed to this arrangement, 2 nights with the ocean view would be fine.
After arriving in Vernazza, going up hill to the Mother house, we where sent to the another relatives B&B, up hill again with luggage, put into a room with no window and a shared bath.
The following day our luggage was moved to Elisabetta's, we where put into a room with no view and no terrace.
We spoke with a couple from Australia who where staying at Elisabetta's and had the very same experience . Do not trust Elisabetta, reservations mean nothing!!

I think pretty much anything you find will do the trick. You won't be spending that much time in your room given the discovery that awaits you outside. Do a web search and/or pursue the Rick Steves' suggestions in his guide books.

If you can't find anything in the Cinque Terre (which I doubt will happen), the next town north/west (toward France) is Camogli - an absolutely beautiful seaside town. Larger than those in the Cinque Terre, but at times (at times) less touristed.
