Planning on getting a room in Monterossa in June ( I know tourist season). Just wondering how noisy it is at night if we stay at Hotel Spiagglia or Hotel Baia, which are located in front of the beach in main part of town. We just really would like to stay closer to everything verses having to walk steep hills or rely on shuttles to get us to and from town. Any advice or knowledge of past experiences appreciated.
Hi Tracey,
No worries about walking up/down hills or needing to use shuttles in Monterosso; it's the only "flat" town in the CT. There are no hills in Monterosso & also no shuttles. We stayed in old town Monterosso in Sept '09 & had no problems getting around. It's a small town and everything was within walking distance on flat streets. It was approximately a 10-minute walk from the train station to our hotel (Hotel Margherita). We are planning to stay in Monterosso again this coming September. I have no personal experience with the hotels that you mentioned but just know that if you stay in old town Monterosso you won't have to walk up or down any hills. Have a great trip.
Tracey, June is the peak of "shoulder season", so Monterosso will probably be somewhat busy. I haven't stayed in those Hotels, but they're located right along the main street through town, which is often busy well into the evening with both pedestrian and vehicle traffic. However, you probably won't notice too much noise. You shouldn't have too many worries about "steep hills" as the terrain is fairly flat. When walking towards the "old town", there's a slight incline when heading towards the tunnel, and then a slight decline when you exit the tunnel. Walking in most places there is very easy. Hopefully the "old town" area will be back to normal operation by that time, as there are some nice restaurants there. Happy travels!
As you progress into the old town Monterosso it does go uphill: thus the heavy flooding last fall. However, it is possible to spend days in Monterosso on almost level streets. Restaurants, hotels, bakeries, cafes, and a children's playground/park are in the level parts of town. I like to stay on Fegina, the street that runs along the sea. My hotel: Mueble Agavi. I last stayed there about 5 years ago, so hope they are still open. There is/was bus and taxi service from the new part of town to the old. A TI is located at the train station, street level.
yes, most of Monterosso is flat. However, there are steep hills to get to some of the gorgeous sites (like the cemetery overlooking the sea) and it's very steep for a shortish hike up to Buranco Agriturismo, where we stayed.
anyone who's reasonably fit can do these hills, but it's a good idea to have decent shoes...ditch the flip flops! Of course, the hike to Vernazza, should it be open, will be very steep at the beginning and end of the hike. I brought my hiking poles and was glad I did.
Thank you for your responses.
Tracey, We stayed in both hotels last June (Baia for one night, and Spiaggia for the next two nights). We did not have a problem with noise in either place. Both of our rooms were seaview/balcony rooms, so we were right along the street, and we actually slept with the doors open every night because the breeze was so nice. If you are still deciding, go with La Spiaggia. Andrea and staff are wonderful.
