The Cinque Terre was hit today by the powerful storm named Ciaran. Many parts of Italy suffered intense rain and very damaging flooding. In coastal Liguria the damage was limited, but of a unique nature. Wind can build enormous waves in the shallow Mediterranean waters and the result is storm surge flooding called a mareggiate in Italian. This local footage shows the storm and some of its effects in Vernazza and Monterosso where 12 foot waves were reported. Here it seems damage was largely limited to the ground floors of buildings and no injuries were reported. The YouTube channel is called Tele Liguria Sud. https://youtu.be/5Ylf0UTvurM?si=Bs9w_opOPRKj5IRd
Milan and Lake Como were hit hard.,
