Cinque Terre: help save our honeymoon!

Our carefully chosen accommodation in Vernazza (La Mala) double-booked us, and now we have no place to stay for three nights (May 19, 20,21). Everything that looks decent is booked. We want something special. Willing to pay, but it doesn't have to be super fancy... Just something unique. Someone? Anyone? We're boarding our flight to Rome now, time is running out... Please help!

Will the people who double-booked you help? They might know of someplace that you don't. I know it might be hard to trust them now, but if they can help... This is where I would just try and let go and see how it unfolds...there are obviously rooms somewhere in Italy available those dates, so maybe a complete change of plans might be in order. You're on your honeymoon so I would think anyplace you go will be fun. How about the Amalfi Coast instead and save CT for another trip?
If all else fails you could stay in LaSpezia or Alessandria and take the train to CT for the day.

If you don't find something in the Cinque Terre, you might try the town of Camogli, just up the coast. The I Tre Merli Locanda Albergo (+39 0185 776752) looks wonderful to me, along the lines of La Mala. We have not stayed there. We stayed in a 2-star hotel (La Camogliese), which was fine for our needs. Camogli is a neat town, very close to C.T. so you could visit. We also took a boat from Camogli to Portofino on a day trip. Best wishes!

So sorry to hear of the double booking!
Have you tried La Toretta or Arpaiu in Manarola?

The Locanda Miranda in nearby Tellaro is a terrific place too. It's only 5 miles or so from the La Spezia train station, where you can board the local Cinque Terre train. www.miranda1959.com

Molly, Sorry to hear of the difficulties regarding your room. Have you managed to find alternate accommodations yet? If you have a copy of the Italy Guidebook, check the accommodations listed there, beginning with Monterosso. It's the largest of the five villages, so has a greater range of places available. You might try Hotel Villa Steno. You could also try Mar-Mar Rooms in Riomaggiore or Pensione Sorriso in Vernazza. Under the circumstances, you'll probably have to take whatever you can find, regardless of price or location. Congratulations and good luck with the Hotel!

Molly, You could roll the dice and inquire at the TI in Monterosso. We did this once and this little, old lady met us and took us up about a million stairs to this amazing little apartment with amazing views. Her English matched my Italian, so I couldn't tell you how to contact her, but it was one of my favorite places I have ever stayed in Europe. It was in May and there were plenty of other options too. I know the RS conventional wisdom is not to stay in Monterosso, but i like it the best.

If you want something to tell your grandchildren, put a little adventure in your honeymoon. As mentioned above, there is a storefront in Monterosso that is a room-finder service. Many, many small places in the CT do not have websites and they do not advertise. They do have the grandmother types that are at the train stations trying to get you to see their apartments. It's a common practice. Also, everybody is either related to everybody else or knows everybody else. Just stepping into smal shops can yield great leads. Even RS indicates in his CT book that you can just show up in the CT. The big hint is to show up early. It doesn't take long for the rooms to be gone. Good luck.

Sorry, I don't agree with these suggestions of "go and try to find someone on the spot". Try this websites, in case you still haven't: www.venere.it
www.booking.com And search them for every of the 5 villages. If you still can't find it, try an accommodation in Levanto.

I agree with those that suggest Levanto. They have their own large beach and each town is a short train ride away. The train station in Levanto's a little walk into town, but CT is a place made for those not afraid to do a little walking/hiking..

Just returned from Italy last night. Vernazza-contact LaMarina Rooms, owner Christian. We stayed there last week and had the best balcony and view in the whole village. Very clean and accomodating, and Christian will carry your bags from the station!
