Cinque Terre Floods and Trip Planned

We just booked a flight to the Cinque Terre Region. We planned to stay in the area in early May. We had planned to stay in Lavento but are flexible. In light of the floods should we change our destination or should the area be repaired and cleaned up by then. I know this is a tough question but input is appreciated. What would be a safe alternative town in the area? Were the hiking trails destroyed? Thanks

Tom, I'd suggest leaving your travel arrangements in place for now, and re-assessing the situation in the new year. Levanto wasn't affected as much as Monterosso and Vernazza, so staying there will probably be fine. At this point, there's no way to provide any information on the hiking trails. The trail between Manarola and Corniglia has been closed for many months, and is still closed. Current information also shows the Via dell'Amore between Manarola and Riomaggiore closed at this time. Heavy rains are scheduled in the area for at least the next few days, so the situation could change. While the Cinque Terre will probably not be completely back to normal by next May, I believe it's still worth a visit. They will need all the support they can get! If you decide to go ahead with the trip, contact the Hotel you plan to use and ask them for information on current conditions. Try to book your accommodations as early as possible. Cheers!

If you read the answers to same questions (just scan down) you can see that it way too early to have an answer. Some hiking trails have been blocked since a Spring rain problem earlier this year. Hiking trails probably will be the last thing repaired. The towns of Monterosso and Vernazza were the hardest hit and probably the last to recover. Local contacts, hotels and TIs, would be your best source of information. I would work an alternate plan just in case.
