Cinque terre

We are staying in Florence and want to do a day tour to Cinque Terre. Is it best to take a n organized tour or do it on our own by train.

My suggestion would be to do the trip on your own. That way you'll be able to completely control the schedule and the sights you see. Check the Trenitalia website to find the departures times you want in both directions. In many cases, you'll have at least one change, either as Pisa Centrale or La Spezia Centrale.

You might consider starting in Riomaggiore and then tour the other towns using the frequent local trains. Plan to arrive in Monterosso about supper time so that you can enjoy a fine meal in one of the excellent restaurants there. Cantina di Miky is a big favourite with many here (it's very close to the rail station).

And another vote for going solo by train. This will also allow you the flexibility to do something else in Florence should it decide to pour rain the day you might have booked a tour: the CT is not a lot of fun in the rain.

Voting with Ken on Cantina di Miky too: great place.
