Hi Everyone
We will be in Italy mid-May through June, and plan to rent a car while we are in the Tuscan region. We'd like to plan a day trip to see the Cinque Terre area, and knowing that they are car-free villages, wondering what we do with our car once we get there. Are there parking lots available? Are they pay parking? And are they full? Thanks for any info you can provide!
If you are planning just a day trip, park your car at the train station in La Spezia and take a train from there.
Kim,
The best options will either be to park in the large car park near La Spezia Centrale and then take the local trains to the five towns. You could also consider driving to Monterosso as there are car parks both in the new town (close to the beach) and in the old town (at the top of Via Roma). These are all pay lots, but I can't remember what the costs are. From Monterosso you can also explore the other towns using the local trains or boats (weather permitting).
Don't drive into Monterosso as that's a ZTL (limited traffic) area and you'll face hefty fines. THIS is the warning sign at the top of Via Roma in the old town.
