Cinque Terre

We are on a tight schedule. We will be in Rome and traveling towards Venice and would like to stop off in and spend the day hiking in Cinque Terre. How would that work?

Sadly, the CT is not on the way from Rome to Venice. Venice is on on the east coast, the CT is on the west coast. It's 4.5 - 5 hours to go from Rome to the CT by train, and then from the CT to Venice by train it's 5.5 - 6.5 hours (depending on the day/time of departure). Realistically, this is not a feasible day trip; at least not for a day trip where you get any sightseeing in.

Not particularly well in my opinion, but its your trip.

Rome to Monterosso is about 4 and 1/2 hours on the train. Monterosso to Venice is around 6 to 8 hours depending on when you leave.

The CT is a bit out of the way (part of its charm) and kind of off the path from Rome to Venice. Rome to Venice on the Eurostar is about 4.5 hours.

It is possible. You could take an 8 am train and get to Monterosso about 12:30. then take 2:55 pm train to Venice and get in around 10 pm. So you could hike for about 2 hours at the cost of an additional 6 hour on a train and a late arrival to Venice.

Not well. The CT is on the opposite Italian coast from Venice. The closest transfer point you will get is Florence before the train starts heading NE to Venice. Rome to Venice on the high-speed takes 4.5hours. Rome to the CT to Venice on various types of trains takes 10.5hours of train travel overall. That's 6.0hrs out of the way. The earliest you can get to the CT by train is about 11:00am by taking an early high-speed to Florence and the the local trains to the CT. If you take the 16:07 train out of Monterosso for Venice, you'll get there at 22:07. That gives you about 5.0hrs in the CT if you are trying to do this in one day.

A bit of geography knowledge might come in handy here :-)

Linda,

As the others have indicated that's not going to be easy, as the Cinque Terre is in Liguria on the west coast while Venice is on the opposite side.

There is a direct train from Roma Termini to La Spezia with a travel time of four hours, but after spending a few hours hiking the trails that doesn't leave much time to get to Venice (which is at least a six hour trip). I'd suggest either dropping the Cinque Terre this time, or adjusting your Itinerary so that you can spend at least one night there.

Good luck!
