Cinque Terre Car Drop

We will be traveling across northern Italy this April with a rental car. We currently have two nights booked in Vernazza Cinque Terre and I'm curious as to the best place to leave the rental. Is there a parking lot at the Vernazza train station? Is it best to leave the car at a bigger city train station and then train into town from there?

Any other CT tips/tricks/must dos are also very welcome. Or suggestions for hiking/boating/train rides to see all the towns.

Do you need the car after the Cinque Terre visit?

If you don't, maybe you might consider returning the car in La Spezia, next to the Cinque Terre, then take the short train ride to Vernazza. All rental locations in La Spezia are near the port. From there to the train station is a 10 min taxi ride.

If you intend to keep the rental car while at the Cinque Terre because you absolutely need it later, the parking lots are available at La Spezia train station, and also in Riomaggiore or Monterosso, which is just one station away from Vernazza. The town of Vernazza had very limited parking, as far as I remember, and I think it's all reserved for residents now and maybe 1 hr parking for visitors. But you should check with your hotel and see what they have to say.

Ashley,

Having a car in the Cinque Terre is of little use, as it will be parked and gathering dust during your visit, and incurring parking charges. I agree with Roberto that if you don't need the car when you arrive there, return it in La Spezia and just use the local trains.

Regarding C.T. suggestions.....

  • If you're planning on hiking the Sentiero Azzurro trails, not all segments may be open in April. You'll have to ask the staff at your hotel when you arrive. Note that a Park Pass is required to hike those particular trails, which you can easily buy when you arrive there.
  • The boats are weather-dependent, so they may or may not be operating. April is the beginning of the tourist season, so things may still be a bit quiet.
  • The local trains are the quickest and easiest way to get between each of the five towns. There are charts at each of the stations that provide a schedule of arrivals and departures.
