Cinque Terre -- Best Side Trips / Day Trips?

My wife and I will be set up in Cinque Terre for 4 days in late July. We like having one hotel to come back to, but we'll probably do at least one day trip. Any suggestions for nearby towns to check out? And which towns of the 5 in Cinque Terre are a good home base for being able to do a small trip or two?

Monterosso in the CT is a good base. We took a ferry to Portovenere for the day, beautiful town, larger than the CT villages. Or go to Santa Margherita Ligure and Camogli, quick side trip from there to Pirtofino if you want. The whole coast is beautiful.

Levanto is 1 town to the North of CT. It is a surfing beach, so if you like that scene, it's pretty cool. You can also take a pedestrian tunnel from Levanto to Bonnasola which is a nice walk. Both of those towns are on the train line, so it's easy to walk or train back and forth...

The train runs through all the towns, so any would work as a home base. They are only a few minutes apart. We also did a day trip to Porto Venere on the ferry. Very nice.

We'll be in Monterosso in a couple of weeks. Not sure about other towns, besides the 5 that comprise the Cinque Terr, but one little extra that we plan to do is a sunset cruise. There are a couple of places out of Monterosso that offer them, or just regular cruises scenic cruises. Kind of a nice little extra.

Staying in Corniglia and using the train might be problematic. The town is up a bunch of stairs from the station. About 500 steps.

Monterosso is a good base. It is right in the middle of trip north or south. Also has the most hotels and restaurants.

You can cover at least two more of the five towns in one day trip. We enjoy Vernazza and Manarola. Each town is similar, but they have their own uniqueness.
