Arrive in Genoa at noon on a friday in Oct. would like to take train to spend time in CT probably riomaggiorie and have to be back in Genoa for a 5 pm cruise on Sat. We know it's not enough time to spend in CT but it's best we can do this trip. Question: given travel times on train, is it feasible to even attempt to do this?
Ciao, Karen. Well, if you touch down via plane at noon, you'd want to make the 2:11 PM train to Monterosso al Mare, which only takes 90 minutes. So you could be in CT by 4:00 PM on Friday, theoretically. And you could take the 1:12 PM train back from Monterosso on Saturday, getting into Genova at 2:51 PM. But that really leaves you with just about 20 total hours in CT without running from or to the station. Is it feasible? Yes, certainly. And I suppose if you look at it as a whirlwind kind of one-night/one-morning peak at Monterosso and maybe one more village, it might even be fun. But it's certainly not the slow-down kind of vibe the region does best. You could stay in Riomaggiore, but given how little time you have, additional trains seem more hassle than worth. If it was me, I'd spend a night checking out Monterosso, wake early and take the few minute train ride to another village to check that out, have breakfast (via del Amore?), and then return to check-out and head back to Genova. Buona fortuna! PS: Keep in mind Italian Regionale trains...not so reliable/dependable. So I'd go in knowing that a delayed or canceled train could seriously cut into your time. Attitude would have to be a 'roll with the punches' one!
