Thinking of Cinque Terre, Portofino, Genoa and then north to lake region by Stresa or Como for 2 weeks in September. Any must see or do suggestions or travel tips. We enjoy sightseeing, wondering old towns, shopping and good food. Forgot to mention we are two active seniors that will not be driving. Thank you in advance.

I would stay in nearby Santa Margherita Ligure rather than little and over the top expensive Portofino. Camogli with it’s colorful buildings would be another choice. SML has many hotels and restaurants. We enjoyed Hotel Continental.
Then I would drive to the Piemonte and stay in or near Alba. Many charming wine villages surround this town. Lake Maggiore is to the East closer than Lake Como. Both are nice areas but we tend to favor Lake Como and stay in Bellagio.
Milan MXP would be the best airport.

We were in that area late Sep and were very happy with Rapallo as a base. Easy train connections to Genoa, Camogli, Monterosso, ferry to Portofino & Portovenere when waters permitted sailings, beautiful boardwalk, nice old town decorated with umbrella canopies, shopping, restaurants. Portofino is nice as a day trip but it’s not that well connected & restaurants have high cover charges.
We also enjoyed 3 nights in Stresa, spending one day seeing Isola Bella & taking the cable car+chair lift up Monte Mottarone for the views and the next day going to Lake Orta where I regret only getting 1 200g of dried porcini. Tuscany prices were almost double!
