We 2 couples will be spending about 5 days in each of these 2 locations just wandering around in early October. Any 'insider' tips? Especially little day jaunts by train, foot or ferry from Levanto, our home base on the Riviera.

Cynthia, It would help to have a bit more information. Where are you planning to stay in the Cinque Terre and on "Lakes Maggiore & Como"? If I'm reading your post correctly, you have about 16-days to work with? Cheers!

Be sure to walk the tunnels from Levanto to Bonassola. We also took a day trip to Portovenere by train and bus via La Spezia and enjoyed that.

I stayed in Levanto and loved it. I got the train pass/hiking permit at the train station and went all up and down the 5 towns.
Levanto is also a great beach and nice little town to walk around in. There are some great restaurants.....sorry I can't remember the names of them.
